London, 15 June, 2001
We are pleased to notify you about the launching of the web site that will
disseminate the work of LooseGrid.
LooseGrid is principally a laboratory for interdisciplinary research in the
city exploring the relationships between art, technology and the urban
space. The project takes the form of a computer-based network built as a
creative environment where researchers and residents can work together
exploring new technologies in the urban space and encouraging the
generation of creative feedback among residents.
The project has a rich mixture of research interests including electronic
media, visual anthropology, sociology, sociology of networking, computer
sciences, virtual and physical environments, sociology of technology,
sociology of media and communications, urban technology, art production and
presentation, design and art and computers.
LooseGrid will be essentially an educational organisation operating under
the principles of a free academy for the carrying out of research and for
contributing to the broadening of the base of knowledge at street level,
focusing on the social, visual-cultural and technological dimensions of the
urban space.
Although based initially in London, we welcome collective projects with
institutions and organisations in other cities in the world, for the
establishment of inter-city and pan-national networks to explore social,
creative and technological aspects of the city.
LooseGrid is being developed as an interdisciplinary project spanning
several universities. Currently people participating in the project are
based at Goldsmiths College London, Slade School of Art, Nottingham Trent
University, University of Surrey, University of Essex, Newcastle University
and Camberwell College of Art.
We hope that you enjoy visiting the web site and if you require more
