THE KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY - NEW HOPE OR NEW HYPE ?

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 15
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF EAST LONDON
Docklands Campus

Bringing together knowledge workers across the public and private sectors

Defining and debating key issues of policy and practice

Presenting case studies and leading edge research

Focussing on East London

Knowledge Trades Fair

This conference will examine the past, present and future of the knowledge
economy, as both concept and reality over the last decade. Beneath the
hype, the prophecies of doom or new dawn what are the actual problems and
possibilities we face ? Are we going to see the emergence of new knowledge
chains linking education, business enterprise, and the community , or will
the gulf between the information rich and information poor continue to
widen? Are the new opportunity structures an example of meritocracy in
action or are ageism, sexism and racism still rampant? Do actual knowledge
work experiences match up to their glamorous image or is chronic job
insecurity and self exploitation the real name of the game? To discuss
these and other questions we are bringing together academics, business and
community leaders, policy makers, creative entrepreneurs and wide range of
practitioners in a day of debates, seminars, and presentations. There will
be a knowledge trades fair, with displays from multimedia publishers,
dot.com enterprises, community organisations and many others.
