Subject: 'Reclaiming the Artists Identity'

Hello there,

As some of you know already furtherfield.org is an independent art's
collective. And I have been asked to do a talk about collectives and
individuals who have opted out of the institutional art's arena. And
whom are now creating their own territories and strategies via the net,
independent spaces, the streets etc. I would be very interested in your
stories as research for my paper, which will be read at 'Beyond the
Academy? Critical geographies in Action' University of Northumbria at
Newcastle, England 12-14 September 2001. Conference website -
http://gem.unn.ac.uk/conferences/beyond.html

The Paper that I am reading is called 'Reclaiming the Artists Identity',
which was originally read at the 'Slacker Cyber Conference may 30 -
june2 1996 hubinterc@f=E9, bath, England.
http://www.irational.org/cybercafe/chaos/

I am now updating it due to the many positive changes that have evolved
since first reading the paper.

Below are the questions of what I need answers to.........if you have
any other info that you feel I should know, please feel free to e-mail
me from the link at the bottom of the page. Also please specify if you
wish to be anonymous. Thanks everyone---------creative liberation is at
hand :-)

Marc Garrett

The Questions....

   * Are you one of the many individuals who did apply to art college
and did not get in? If so how did you manage to survive and what
happened at the Interview? (Give more info if necessary...)
   * Are you part of an independent art's collective/organisation? If so
please give me the reasons of why you formed it, how you did it,
     and what your function is?
   * Are you a curator, or exhibition's organiser who is fed up with the
structure of the funding bodies? If so tell me your experience of
this problem? Have you managed to change the situation and how did
     you do it?
   * Are you an x art student who felt restrained by the controls and
ideas of the college that you studied in? If so tell me why. And
are you now finding new strategies alternative to the suggested
remits of the college that you originally studied in?
   * Are you an artist who has decided not to study in college? If so
tell me if it has been harder for you to get involved in
exhibitions or projects because of this decision? And what you have
     done to resolve the situation.
   * Are you an x artist who has given up creating art due to some of
the issues above? If so please tell me why you are no longer an
     artist.
   * Are you an entrepreneur who practises within the independent
arts/creative environment? If so tell me what you do and the issues
that you have come up against and how you believe thay can be
     resolved.

Finally, if you do not fit into any of the catagories above but have
information relating to its context and wish to disclose some
information that you feel is relevant, please do not hesitate to
contact.

Thank you for your co-operation/information and all parties involved
will of course be mentioned. I do not wish to change or re-edit anyone's
contribution in respect of the individuals or organisations intentions.
Although I do wish to have permission to take extracts for reference if
needed for the
paper.

Furtherfield.org is a non-profit organisation dedicated to exploring
alternative vistas of creativity in previously restricted territories,
liberating the genius within us all to freely create in whatever medium
we chose. We declare our intentions using the internet, the streets &
public spaces. If you are like us & feel that there are constraints that
restrict your personal or collective creative ambitions, or you are keen
to rediscover the original reasons of why you started becoming a
creative explorer - join us in re-inventing new arenas that bypass the
art arena=92s limited remit. We Can Make Our Own World=85
