Yale Summer Music Course in Austria

"The Music of Schoenberg's Middle Period 1908-1923: From Romanticism to
Dodecaphony." A Yale Summer Programs course to be held in Moedling,
Austria, June 4-July 6, 2001.

This five-week course, to be given in the former Arnold Schoenberg house
in the village of Moedling, concentrates on the study of selected works
from the composer's atonal period (the post-tonal, pre-serial music) in
their cultural-artistic context. Offered in cooperation with the
newly-established Arnold Schoenberg Center in Vienna and conducted in
English, the course carries one college credit, equivalent to a one-term
course in Yale College. Pre-requisites: basic tonal harmony, counterpoint,
and form.

The Schoenberg Festival in Vienna, commemorating the fiftieth anniversary
of the composer's death, will also be attractive to students in the
course. During the festival many of his works will be performed, including
his major opera, Moses und Aron, conducted by Kent Nagano. Vienna is
accessible from Moedling by a train connection of 30 minutes.
