Dear Colleagues:
"Towards an Integrated History of Eurasian Civilization, 1000-1800"
is an NEH Summer Institute that will take place at the Davis Center for
Russian Studies, Harvard University from approximately July 1 to August 2
(5 weeks). The Institute will bring experts in inner Asian history
together with college teachers from a variety of disciplines in an effort
to the create of a new trans-national framework for the study and teaching
of "Eurasian Civilization." The framework will augment the study of
particular Eurasian "national" cultures (Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Persia,
India, China, etc.) by placing them in their greater civilizational
context, much in the same way "European Studies" (or similar Area Studies
fields) aid in the understanding of particular nations.
Faculty: Thomas Barfield, David Christian, Devin Deweese, Nicola Di Cosmo,
Mark Elliot, Elizabeth Endicott, Richard Foltz, Peter Golden, Beatrice
Manz, David Morgan, Victor Ostapchuk, Donald Ostrowski, Uli Schamiloglu.
Approximately 30 college and university teachers will be invited to attend
the Institute as participants. ALL INTERESTED COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY
TEACHERS ARE URGED TO APPLY. Successful applicants will receive a
generous stipend from NEH to cover the cost of travel, room and board.
