GALICIA - THE HISTORIC REGION OF EUROPE

15 - 29 July 2001

Summer programme prepared by the College for New Europe of the
International Cultural Centre in Krakow, in co-operation with the Institut
fuer den Donauraum und Mitteleuropa in Vienna and the Institute of
International Affairs of Vienna University.

The overall idea of the curriculum is the awakening of the collective
spirit in the inhabitants of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. The
authors of the programme are convinced that in the regions of southern
Poland and the western Ukraine are still alive: the collective memory of
Galicia, the feeling of Galician identity, the tradition of multi-culture
and the myth of the land where all ethnic, religious and national
differences coexisted in harmony. The subject of "Galicia" awakes
reflection on the history and present days of this region of Europe, the
possibility of obliterating frontiers, European integration, multi-culture
in the multinational commonwealth, and the fear of the domination of one,
local or "global", culture.

The analysis of the history of the multi-national region of Galicia is
expected to contribute to the discussion on the problems of European
integration in relation to Poland and the Ukraine, the possibility of
regional co-operation, issues connected with the transformation of
political systems and contemporary fear of losing national identity.

The curriculum was prepared by Dr Emil Brix and Prof. Jacek Purchla. The
organizers have invited such lecturers as Prof. Hanspeter Neuhold and
Prof. Gerhard Fink from Vienna and Prof. Jacek Wozniakowski from Krakow.
Lectures will be conducted in English. The programme will end with a study
tour to Przemysl and Lvov.

The course is addressed to young scholars, postgraduate students and older
students.

The applications will be sent after mail, e-mail or fax request to:

About the organizers:

The College for New Europe is an educational institution of the
International Cultural Centre opened in May 1991 during the CSCE Symposium
on Cultural Heritage in Krakow. The educational programmes aim at bringing
together young students from the European countries and the USA to discuss
political, cultural and social issues of today in the perspective of
integration of Europe. The College has organized 37 summer sessions so far
and the number of participants who have already taken part in the sessions
comes up to 1400.

Most of the students from Central and Eastern Europe have been able to
participate in the sessions thanks to full scholarship granted by the
organizers.

The faculty are eminent professors and experts who deliver lectures on
academic level.

Most of them come from the institutions which have cooperated with the
International Cultural Centre since its beginnings, to mention Institut
fuer den Donauraum und Mitteleuropa (Wien), Katholieke Universiteit
Leuven, Academia Istropolitana Nova (Bratislava) and New School University
(New York).

The curriculum comprises lectures, seminars, workshops and panel
discussions on subjects connected with heritage protection and specific
social and political problems on the borderlands of Poland and the
neighbouring countries in multicultural Europe.

Throughout the whole time of the College activities the programmes have
considered the problems of Central Europe in the period of transformation,
to mention the courses: Political and Cultural Change in Central Europe
(1994), The Future of Central European Roots (1995), Central Europe and
European Integration - Past, Present, Future (1998), Population Movements
in Central Europe. Past, Present, Future (2000).

The sessions connected with the protection of cultural heritage suggest
the solutions of the difficult economic situation of the institutions
engaged in the preservation of the urban and landscape heritage:
Integrated Urban and Landscape Heritage (1996), Heritage and
Transformation (1999).

The other sessions organized by the College also comprise the elements of
transformation and integration though on the larger scale. Among them
there are two important programmes: Sommerakademie organized for Polish
and German students in co-operation with the Studienstiftung des deutschen
Volkes in Bonn, and Democracy and Diversity session organized with our
partner from New York (USA), the New School for Social Research.

All these activities aim at integrating neighbouring nations of Central
Europe and further integration is to result in the eastern enlargement of
the European Union.
