I am updating Tracing Your West Indian Ancestors. Sources in the Public
Record Office and am currently writing a section which provides tips on how
to trace slave ancestors. Not an easy subject! I have two broad questions:
I know that there are quite a few publications relating to American slave
genealogy but I have not seen any for the West Indies, in particular the
British West Indies. Are there any?
Secondly where were slaves buried? I have come across instances of burial
plots on plantations which had significant land for such burials - the
recording of these burials will be in surviving estate papers. Where were
personal slaves buried and how were they recorded? I have used parish
registers in Barbados but at the time I was looking for specific families -
since slaves in the Protestant British colonies were discouraged from being
baptised would they be buried in Church yards?
Thanks
