Hi:
I have read the e-mail from Ioannis about the Irish Referendum. I hope that as
she said, behind the defeat of the Niza Treaty we can see the movilization of
the "social forces" of Europe. Anyway, it would be a goog thing if we could
measure the nationalist and social ideas behind the "no" vote, since I think
it could be a mix of these two concepts what lies behind the result.
But speaking about social Europe its necessary to point out that in all
comparative surveys of attitudes the "social concern" of the europeans is
clearly expressed. The majority of the people in most european countries
support redistribution, social policy and so on. But, Does that it means that
these attitudes are going to be translated to the political arena?
That will depend on the articulation and organisation of these attitudes.
And, if we asume that the Institutions affect the articulation of attitudes,
then its important to observe what is the rol played by the European
Institutions. (I would say they are blocking the organisation of these social
concern).
The forces against a "social Europe" are strong, and can not be stoped just by
attitudes. We need a translation of these attitudes in political organizations
and in political action, and we need it now.
How does all that sounds to you?
Best,
Ines.
