Thanks, Chris, I like you too, and, as you know from the b-c apology I've
already sent you, I never thought of you as one of the Brit-Po bully boys or
piss artists. Your Conley post did take me aback, though, as it seemed odd
to have gone to all that effort to find out what he called his research
period and how he periodized Montaigne, as if I might be confused about that
despite my longtime collegial relationship with Tom (on some of whose
Montaigne publications I've actually worked). But no, you weren't hellbent
on being right, or bullying me either; that was a couple of other guys--a
couple of the same ones who bullied Richard Dillon recently. Seems to be the
Brit-Po ethos of the moment, alas, but it ain't me who's doing the bullying,
obviously. I just gave up yesterday and exited in a disgusted huff.
It's too bad that the acting out of a few can derail interesting discussions
for the rest of us, but there are interesting discussions happening all over
the Web and offline too, so it's not as if Brit-Po were the only basket
holding all our eggs.
I'm curious about why you'd say you've seen me in "conflict with people on
lists," always "so angry," and, strangest of all, as "destroying lists"
(what lists? when?). For one thing, this is the only list we're both on now
(isn't it?); and, for another, I picked up the exact same rumor about myself
coming off of Poetryetc just last week. Seems to be some poison penmanship
circulating in the back-channels, but bullies are notorious cowards, and b-c
scandal-mongering is a fact of list life. C'est la vie, que sirrah sirrah,
etc. etc.
All the best to you, Chris--
Candice
