Lawrence, you might not have had in mind my "challenge" to Charles Bernstein
recently posted, but just in case, I wanted to say that requesting
clarification and open discussion on a flagrantly malicious charge that was
publicly made is not simply "resentment" on my part. The issues giving rise
to Bernstein's vitriol at MLA are complex, and a candid written exchange
around them could prove to be very interesting, I think-- and not just to
American poets, since the entanglements involved are non-national, so to
speak, in their poetic/theoretical implications (not to mention that the
Yasusada controversy has been discussed quite a bit in England and
Australia). And I would want to undertake such an exchange in the spirit of
proper deliberation, without mention of the Poetics affair of '98-'99, for
example.
Would such a debate really be "gate-crashing" at Brit-po? It needn't be the
central thread-- it could be just one of many, and folks with an interest in
reading along or contributing could check in. I think the results might make
for a useful document.
In any case, I'm cc'ing Charles on this, so he is aware of my interest. I
should say that if he *does* accept my proposal, that I won't be able to
begin for a few weeks, until health-care responsibilities here at home are
over. I hope he will accept.
