David,
I am the system administrator at Huddersfield who carried out the upgrade
from Courseinfo 4 to Blackboard 5.0.x with Neil at the start of the year (10
months ago). I've been a bit busy hence the belated response.
We did have a few teething problems but the migration process did complete
relatively quickly (less than one hour). I vaguely remember getting
"OpenDirException" messages. These might be related to access rights if you
are on a UNIX system. You have not stated which operating system you are on
or the specifications of your machine.
When we upgraded from Courseinfo 4 to Blackboard 5.0.x we used a Sun E250
with 1GB RAM. It goes without saying that you need to ensure that you take a
backup before starting the upgrade. We carried out our upgrade on a separate
machine using a point in time backup. I vaguely remember having to repeat
the process a couple of times after investigating things like the
"OpenDirException" messages.
There were some logs generated which gave some indication of what was
happening but they were not very detailed. I cannot remember where they were
but Blackboard Support (no comment) should be able to tell you, or you
could look around the system.
If you have an official Blackboard Support contract then you should have
access to their web site for Administrators. I've checked this and it gives
the impression that you must first move to Blackboard 5.0.2 before moving to
Blackboard 5.5.1.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.
Clive

As I was writing this, Blackboard started doing things again.
Unfortunately, it is giving this:
Section 3.3 Migrating CourseInfo files
Total of 226 courses need to be migrated
Migrating
HUPH3040.2001.S2...................................OpenDirException
at ./bb50mig_main.pl line 1203.
Migrating
NURS356.2001.S2.Singapore..........................OpenDirException
at ./bb50mig_main.pl line 1323.
Has anyone come across this before?
Regards
David
