CALL FOR PAPERS
BYRON: HERITAGE AND LEGACY
THE XXVIIth INTERNATIONAL BYRON CONFERENCE
4-13 AUGUST 2001
This major, ten-day International Byron Conference, sponsored by The
Byron
Society of America and the University of Delaware, will be held at the
following locations:
4-6 August--Houghton Library, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA
6-9 August--New York City
9-13 August--University of Delaware, Newark, DE
The Conference Committee calls for papers on the literary and historical
and cultural influences on Byron and his works, as well as the influence
the poet and his works had on subsequent literature and history and
culture. Speakers may take various approaches to this theme on
"HERITAGE
AND LEGACY," but the committee encourages new scholarship addressing
Byron's pivotal position in literary and cultural history--how Byron's
own
heritage shaped his works and/or how Byron's legacy has shaped the
post-Romantic world.
The Committee seeks papers of approximately 20-25 minutes for the
conference, the length allowing ample time for discussion after the
delivery of three papers in each two-hour session. We also would
entertain proposals for panel discussions, in which five or six
participants could deliver 5-minute papers as a prelude to discussion
among the panelists and with the audience. Although most of the papers
will be delivered at the University of Delaware, some papers will be
offered in Boston and New York City. In all venues, we hope to run
single
rather than concurrent sessions.
Papers of 8-9 pages or abstracts of 500 words or suggestions for panels
should be sent to the address below, no later than 1 March 2001. The
Conference Committee will select the papers for the program by 1 April,
and speakers will be offered an honorarium and/or reimbursed some travel
expenses for their participation. Because there will be speakers from a
number of foreign countries, The Byron Society of America and the
University of Delaware are currently raising additional funds to
increase
the honoraria and/or reimbursement for those traveling internationally.
The plenary lecture at the University of Delaware will be delivered by
Dr.
Kay Redfield Jamison, whose Touched with Fire: Manic-depressive Illness
and the Artistic Temperament (1993) contained a major and influential
chapter on Byron. By the beginning of February, a full schedule of
events
in Boston, New York, and Delaware will be published. Conference
participants, for example, will have both receptions and exhibitions at
the Houghton Library at Harvard, at the Foundation for Hellenic Culture
in
New York City, and at The Byron Society Collection at the University of
Delaware. Many other events are being planned. The Byron Society of
America will provide air-conditioned coach transportation from Boston to
New York to Delaware.
