John Jacob Niles, in his later career, admitted that he had written the versions of some of the carols he had previously reported collecting. I seem to remember "the old lady with the grey hat" who provided "The Coventry Carol" recorded at an "Old Timers' Day" on the 16th June 1934 at
Gatlinburg, Tenn. turned out to be a fiction.
Can anyone confirm whether Amos Curtis, the Holiness preacher who reportedly sang "Down in Yon Forest" in Cherokee County, North Carolina in 1933 was equally spurious - or did he actually exist ?
