Since I posted my query about where Henry James might have heard Burd
Helen, I've found a Scottish set of Fair Annie (Child 62) with that
title. Roderick Hudson is too early for the 'definitive' Child edition,
but it appeared after his first collection English and Scottish Ballads
(1860)- feel like checking, anyone? Maybe he found it there. Or maybe
Henry and William just liked lurking round gypsy encampments: you know
what a pair they were for slumming it.
