That was the first line of the depressingly corny version by the Bachelors
which infested the pop charts in 1963, and was presumably of the original. I
had always thought it was 1930s schmaltz, and it was certainly available on
Columbia 78s in 1935 (listed in their catalogue as composed by Rapee &
Pollack, and available as sung by Layton & Johnson or by G.T. Pattman on the
cinema organ). They certainly knew how to have fun then.
