Local Authority Circular LAC (2001)13
COMMUNITY EQUIPMENT SERVICES
The NHS Plan set out the GovernmentAEs commitment to modernising community equipment services currently provided by local councils and the NHS. This guidance applies to community equipment services for all age groups including children. It sets out action that should be taken to improve provision by the development of integrated local authority and NHS equipment services, particularly in conjunction with the intermediate care initiative. Further details are contained in a Guide to Integrating Community Equipment Services which is being published simultaneously.
Action: Building on equipment services already in place, health authorities, primary care groups/trusts, NHS trusts and councils should work together to use the additional funding being made available to meet NHS Plan targets:
? Increase the number of people benefiting from community equipment
services by 50% by March 2004.
? Integrate local council and NHS equipment services by March 2004.
Key early milestones are:
? End July 2001: Identify a lead senior officer in each
organisation, and a single lead officer to head the planning
work.
? End October 2001: Publish a baseline audit report of current
community equipment services.
? April 2002: Draft, with stakeholders, outline action plans for
meeting the NHS Plan targets and to publish final versions in
October 2002.
