LISU SEMINAR Spring 2001
Enriching People's Lives: Developing and Implementing Cultural Strategies
LISU, Loughborough University: Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 March 2001.
Culture in its widest sense has so much to offer - giving pleasure to
millions; educating, informing and widening horizons; releasing those
impulses (creative, sporting and educative) which allow individuals to
fulfil their potential - but most importantly they are about improving the
quality of life for everyone.
So says Chris Smith in his Foreword to the DCMS Draft offering guidance on
local cultural strategies.
Developing cultural services and activities in the community involves a
range of people and agencies; museums, galleries, libraries, theatres,
concert halls, archives and heritage sites, to name but a few. With such a
plethora of interests and activity how can a focus and direction be created
that make the best use of energy and resources? What contributes to the
evolution of successful strategies? What evidence is needed to help
assemble strategies, and to assess their effectiveness and monitor
performance once realised?
At LISU's Spring 2001 Seminar a gathering of specialists will share their
experiences and knowledge. It will capture the cross-sectoral character of
the topic and look from several perspectives at the work that goes into
developing and implementing cultural strategies at both local and regional
level. The Seminar will interest and inform those who are similarly
involved in managing agencies that promote cultural development, and in
particular those who are developing formal strategic plans.
