Dear all
Thanks for the responses to my query.
As a result we have changed our book and adopted a tick box system with
residence reduced to a choice of Worcestershire, elsewhere in UK, overseas.
We also have tick boxes for subject of research. Our visitor's book is used
for compiling statistics and signing to agree to the searchroom rules. As
the History Centre does not hold original documents we are less concerned
about security, although there are still lockers available for users to
deposit their bags. We do hold printed local studies material on the open
shelves, all of which should be security tagged.
It seems from the responses received both off and on list that record
offices use signing in books for a variety of purposes:
security
compiling statistics
fire register
Where original documents were held some offices relied on reader's tickets
as a means of tracing people in the event of an item going missing.
Interestingly our users are now very confused by ticking boxes instead of
writing out the information in full, despite our assurances that it really
is quicker. It seems you can't please everyone!
