I wonder if anyone can help me.
A friend recently asked my advise regarding scanned records. He is at
present an IT systems advisor working for the National Health Service.
His main duty is to oversee the implementation of IT systems into
doctors surgeries. It has recently come to his attention that current
medical records are being scanned and added to a patients up to date
computer records. However, the original records are then being
shredded. My friend is concerned because he has been asked by GPs
unsure of this practice, how they should proceed. The concern is that
scanned reproductions of records would not be legally admissible in
court if they were ever needed.
Therefore, I wondered if any records managers out there might have
some advise on how to proceed? Neither the doctors or their IT staff
have been given any guidance or advice so far, nor does there seem to
be any statutory guidelines. Do any of you know of a test case
involving similar records that might help them decide how to proceed?
I would be grateful for any advice.
Best regards
