Eileen (and others)
I do apologise if I caused offence. I was not criticising librarians,
merely pointing out the differences between archivists, who have to jump
through hoops for no apparent benefit (and none apparent in the near
future now the Government has moved the goalposts), and librarians, who
do not have to undertake the amount of work for their chartership that
we have to for registration yet receive what is effectively an extra
'qualification' for it. May I also say that I have a number of close
friends who are librarians, and they too consider that the discrepancies
here are ludicrous. And in their opinion 'an essay' is indeed all they
have to do (and yes, they have chartered), so I believe that I am not
speaking with a lack of knowledge. It is not about cross-sector rivalry
at all, but about discrepancies in status. And if librarians are
offended, maybe they should try looking at the argument from the other
side. They do after all get that further qualification.

I do take exception to your comments on the Archives-NRA list. I agree
with
a later comment by Bridget Andrews about suppressing cross sectoral
rivalry
but may I politely suggest that you actually find out what getting
chartered
status from the Library Association actually involves
Eileen Hume Cert.Ed, DipILM, MA, ALA, MiinfSc and hopefully soon to
embark
on PhD

Although since the average archivist is actually paid more than the
average librarian, 'chartership' would seem to have very little
tangible
benefit beyond being allowed to put a couple of extra letters after
your
name. Although it is also, of course, a lot easier to become a
chartered
librarian than a registered archivist. Just do an essay and you're
there. Able to add an ALA to your name. Unbelievable.

What's also funny is that the issue of a lack of archivists coincides
with
the news that we can't become the Royal Chartered Institute of
Archivists or
whatever - I like the name though ;-) , because the SoA doesn't have
enough
members.
Perhaps when the Government realises that levels of Archivists are at
a
critically low level, Mr Blair will have to launch a multi million
pound TV
campaing as they have recently done for nurses, teachers and police
persons.
He could also have a word in the majesterial ear of our noble monarch
who
could then make us all chartered and give us all knighthoods (or
dameships).
