Assistant Archivist
Salary c. £18,000
The Parliamentary Archives, also known as the House of Lords Record Office,
has a vacancy for an assistant archivist on its retrospective conversion
project team. The Archives aims to have created a fully-functioning online
catalogue for use over the web by 2005, containing data conforming to
national and international standards on archival description. The job will,
therefore be on a fixed-term basis running until March 2005 or until the job
is completed, whichever is the sooner, with the possibility of permanent
employment for the incumbent at the end of the fixed term.
The work will involve a wide range of cataloguing and editing activities. As
we will be creating a hierarchical, fully-referenced catalogue of our
holdings for the first time ever, the work will also include a certain
amount of relabelling, reboxing and reviewing of records as you convert
their finding aids.
You must have a recognised post-graduate archive qualification; some
experience of archival cataloguing; a sound understanding of ISAD(G) and the
NCA rules; confidence using Microsoft Word; excellent team-working skills;
and experience of delivering results on time, under pressure. Experience of
using CALM 2000+ would be desirable.
On site facilities are excellent and include several restaurants and a
health and fitness centre. The Archives provides support for those enrolled
on the Society of Archivists Registration Scheme.
Further details and an application form can be obtained from the
Establishment Office, House of Lords, London, SW1A 0PW telephone 020 7219
6630 (answering machine). Completed forms should be returned by first post
on 30 November 2001. Interviews are expected to be held in the week
