HistoryWorld.net
May I introduce you to HistoryWorld, as a useful service for archives?
www.historyworld.net is the ideal site to profile some of the most striking
documents and images in your archive, bringing them to the attention of a
wider public. The thumbnails are placed on your own dedicated timeline,
with links to your website and to background historical information on the
HistoryWorld site. Each separate item is individually indexed and
integrated in the HistoryWorld database, so that users can find your
collection by any of several search procedures.
An example of a timeline on a specific theme is Kent County Archive's
Cricket in Kent - <http://www.historyworld.net/timelines/timeline.asp?
back=existing.asp&from=existing&tid=yoas&title=Cricket%20in%20Kent>
An example of a general collection timeline is that of the Richmond Local
Studies Collection -
<http://www.historyworld.net/timelines/timeline.asp?
back=existing.asp&from=existing&tid=yoab&title=Richmond%20Local%20Studies%
20Collection>
You can find individual images from either timeline through Index Search
(try Mynn or Strawberry Hill) or by selecting Timelines and then Mix from
the menu bar. If you would be interested in HistoryWorld carrying a
timeline of your archive, click on More Details (top left of the
HistoryWorld Home page) to see how it is done. And if you decide to join
in, please email me.
