Press Release:
The University of Alberta Archives is very pleased to announce the
completion of Phase Two of the arrangement and description of the Canadian
Encyclopedia Fonds.
Hurtig Publishers, with the assistance of the University of Alberta,
undertook The Canadian Encyclopedia Project as one of the largest publishing
ventures in Canadian History. Individuals widely recognized as authorities
in their respective fields served as advisors, consultants, readers,
contributors and editors. Recognized experts were commissioned to produce
original art, graphic, cartographic and photographic works.
Phase One of the project completed the arrangement and description of the
first six series in the Canadian Encyclopedia Fonds. Phase Two involved the
arrangement and description of Series 7, the Production Files and three of
five sub-series in Series 8.
The records cover the period from 1975-1985. Approximately 75%of the
material submitted for the 3000 biographies and articles was published. The
remaining material will afford a rich resource for researchers from various
disciplines. In addition to providing a complete business history of the
project, this collection provides a detailed account of Canadian editorial
and publishing practices.
This project was made possible through Control of Holdings funding received
from the Federal Government through the Canadian Council of Archives.
