Well this has been very interesting because similar discussions have taken
place over the past few years on both the archivist and the recmgmt-l
listservs concerning job salaries and the availability of positions.
I know some won't agree with me but a lot of this has to do with good old
supply and demand. There are too many archivists chasing to few positions.
Unfortunately people are accepting low paying positions which then sends
signals the institutions that that is the acceptable salary level. Recently
the Joint Archives of Holland (Michigan) had a difficult time finding
candidates for the position of director. Why? Salary was too low. They
relisted/reposted the position about 4 times each time raising the salary.
The second problem besides salary/wages is that there is no career track/path
for archivists while records managers have a little clearer path. Well that
is my view from across the pond
