ARCHIVIST
Starting salary: c. £19,000 + benefits
The RSA was founded in 1754 and has been hugely influential in many aspects
of British life. Our past members include Benjamin Franklin, Adam Smith,
Karl Marx, Charles Dickens and Guglielmo Marconi. We have been accumulating
records for almost 250 years, and our Archive Project received substantial
funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund for construction of new strongrooms,
and for cataloguing and conserving our archive.
We are now seeking another professional archivist to work with the Senior
Archivist on the further development of the RSA’s archive. The job also
involves the administration and development of the Society’s records
management scheme.
You will have a postgraduate qualification in archival administration and/or
records management and at least one year’s experience in an archive or
record office. You need a good level of computer literacy and ideally,
experience of using Calm or similar archives database package.
You should be self motivated, well organised and adaptable to a range of
tasks including sorting, cataloguing and appraisal of historic material as
well as semi-current records. You will be assisting researchers using our
search room and answering enquiries by telephone, letter and e-mail. You
will also give tours to groups and individuals visiting our historic
premises.
The archive cataloguing backlog is due to be cleared by the end of 2002 by
which time the full catalogue of our holdings will be available via the
Internet. However, there is scope to develop the Society’s archive and
information service beyond this date.
The RSA is based in a purpose-designed Adam house. It is difficult for
people with some disabilities to access it, but we are committed to equality
of opportunity and will do all we can to make this job accessible. We
operate a no-smoking policy at work.
