HACKERS TRY TO SHUT DOWN WHITE HOUSE WEB SITE
(Los Angeles Times) The worm was designed to send a torrent of electronic
data to the White House Web site Thursday at 5 p.m. PST, creating a massive
overload that would cause the site to shut down.

STUDY FINDS MILLIONS OF VOTES LOST
(Washington Post) Between 4 million and 6 million Americans either failed
to cast votes or had their votes invalidated in last year's presidential
election because of faulty equipment, mismarked ballots, polling place
failures and foul-ups with registration or absentee voting, a study by two
leading universities reported Monday.

THE TORY LEADERSHIP ELECTION ON THE NET
(The Register) At 5.32pm Tuesday, the results have come in thus. Ken Clarke
wins with 59 votes, Duncan Smith second with 54 and Portillo is out of the
race with one less, 53. We also got a press release complaining that none of
the Web sites are any good for blind people.

THE INTERNET IN AUTHORITARIAN REGIMES
(Carnegie Endowment) It is widely believed that the Internet poses an
insurmountable threat to authoritarian rule. But political science
scholarship has provided little support for this conventional wisdom, and a
number of case studies from around the world show that authoritarian regimes
are finding ways to control and counter the
political impact of Internet use.

CHINA SHUTS DOWN 2,000 CYBER CAFES
(MSNBC) China has shut down nearly 2,000 Internet cafes across the country
and has ordered 6,000 to suspend operations and make changes, state media
said on Friday.

HOT SITE OF THE WEEK
-----------------------------------------
After three people were shot and wounded in Gothenburg, site of the recent
European Union Summit, G-8 officials scrambled around for anything remotely
resembling a safe venue for the upcoming economic summit. Their final
solution (after briefly considering going offshore) was to seal off the
downtown area surrounding the Palazzo Ducale and depend on massive security
measures to protect the summit attendees from the tens of thousands of
anti-globalization activists. But the activists (who are at times lumped
under the nickname “The Seattle People” after the WTO mayhem) are growing so
rapidly, and the platforms they represent are becoming so much more
disparately intense, that peaceful and controlled demonstrations at any
global finance meeting are, to say the least, unlikely. And during the
increasingly oligarchic G-8, even the most advanced security operation pales
in comparison to the 1000+ protest groups represented in the narrow streets
of Genoa. So if you want some understanding of the complexities surrounding
these protests, a good place to begin is at the website of the Genoa Social
Forum (www.genoa-g8.org), an umbrella organization representing around 800
of the activist groups. The Forum, which urges peaceful action at the
summit, provides information on the vast network of “people and
organizations who criticize today’s world order as unequal and unjust.” The
information offered by the site includes up-to-the-minute G-8 news links,
demonstration listings, legal and medical assistance, extensive coverage of
events, agendas, and participants, and even advice on what to expect in
terms of logistics. Even the briefest of visits to the site will give you
an overwhelming sense of the urgency and passion that the protest groups are
bringing to both the summit and to the world at large.
