Research Associate - Statistics
MRC Biostatistics Unit, Cambridge
The MRC Biostatistics Unit aims to advance medical science by the development
and application of statistical methodology. It is the UK's leading
biostatistics research institution, and comprises a number of internationally
renowned statisticians.
The appointee will work under the supervision of Professor Simon Thompson and
contribute to the analysis of applied studies. The focus of the work will
initially be a randomised screening trial, the Multicentre Aneurysm Screeening
Study (MASS) of 70,000 men, for which the primary analyses will be undertaken
over the next 18 months. The work will also include secondary analyses of the
MASS trial data and analyses of other applied studies. There is the potential
to develop more methodological projects as a component of the work.
The appointment is for 18 months in the first instance, with the possibility of
extension on the basis of work on other applied studies and collaborative
projects. Applicants should have (or be submitting) a PhD, or have an MSc in
Statistics or equivalent experience, as well as experience of statistical
packages such as STATA or SAS. Experience of handling and analysing large data
sets would be advantageous. An appointment in MRC band 4 is expected, with
initial salary likely to be in the range £20,000 to £24,000.
