ASSISTANT STATISTICIAN
ICRF Genetic Epidemiology, St. James's Hospital, Leeds
14,959 to 20,810 Permanent
SCOPE/PURPOSE OF JOB:
Applications are invited for a post as assistant statistician within the
ICRF Genetic Epidemiology Division at St. James's University Hospital,
Leeds. The post-holder will work as part of a team of genetic
epidemiologists and statisticians, clinicians, laboratory and computing
staff on a range of projects investigating the genetic epidemiology of
cancer.
The main research interests of the group are in the fields of melanoma and
bowel cancer. In common with other types of cancer, both of these diseases
are found in a rare familial form, and much progress has been made in
identifying the genes responsible for these forms. However epidemiological
studies have shown that other genes can also increase the risk of these
diseases. One of the major focuses of the group is now to try to identify
such genes and how they may interact with other known risk factors, such as
sun exposure and an atypical pattern of moles (for melanoma) and diet (for
bowel cancer). The epidemiological approaches used include case-control and
cohort studies, studies of families with multiple affected members and a
twin study. The group holds genetic and clinical data on a large number of
individuals and families. The statistical methods involved include methods
common to other types of case-control and cohort study, as well as more
specialised methods appropriate to genetic studies.
The post-holder would be part of a small analysis group within the
Laboratory under the supervision of Dr Jenny Barrett and Professor Tim
Bishop (Head of Laboratory). Responsibilities will include performing
checks of data for completeness and quality, carrying out statistical
analyses and where appropriate providing statistical advice to members of
the research group. This post would suit a recent graduate and provide an
excellent opportunity for gaining experience and training in a growing and
exciting field. Job prospects for genetic statisticians are extremely good.
The successful candidate will have a good first degree in a mathematical or
statistical subject. A higher degree would be an advantage. Experience of
genetics is not expected, but applicants must be interested in learning
about and working in this area.
Informal discussion about this post should be directed to Dr Jenny Barrett
