For over 20 years there has been an annual meeting to discuss matters of
common interest for statisticians employed by UK universities having
medical schools . The policy is to seek wide representation from such
statisticians (usually one per university institution) since the primary
focus of discussion has been the teaching of medical statistics to pre-
clinical undergraduates.
This year, the meeting is to be held Monday-Wednesday 2nd-4th April 2001
and has broadened its usual remit from undergraduate teaching, so that
other interested medical statisticians can apply for one of a limited
number of places that remain to be filled.
The 2001 programme should appeal to medical statisticians working (perhaps
in professional isolation) within hospital settings, or those responsible
for putting on short courses on medical statistics to doctors, nurses, etc.
or for consulting and collaborating with such medical researchers.
Invited speakers include Prof Umberto Giani (University of Naples, Italy)
addressing web-based learning of medical statistics and providing an
international perspective on teaching medical undergraduates and Prof Brian
Everitt (Institute of Psychiatry) talking on “The Future of Medical
Statistics.” The full programme is available on request via e-mail to
[log in to unmask] .
The meeting has a relaxed, informal atmosphere and most sessions are
interactive. The venue, Burwalls, is an attractive conference centre
located adjacent to the Clifton suspension bridge, Bristol, UK. Including
two nights’ accommodation and all meals, registration is £140 payable to
“University of Bristol”. However, since date of meeting is imminent and
places must be reserved in advance, please contact course organiser if you
are interested in attending as soon as possible. Thanks.
