Two medical statistician / epidemiologist posts have been created for the Public Health Intelligence team in Hertfordshire.
Hertfordshire Health Authority was formed in April 2001 by the merger of West Hertfordshire and East & North Hertfordshire Health Authorities, and covers a population in excess of 1 million, the second largest HA in England The population is served by:
* two major acute trusts within Hertfordshire, with hospital sites in Watford, Hemel Hempstead, St Albans, Welwyn Garden City and Stevenage
* other hospitals outside the county
* eight Primary Care Trusts (PCTs)
* a newly formed Partnership Trust, which includes mental health and other services.
There are also strong links to the County Council and other partner organisations.
Data on Coronary Heart Disease, Stroke, Cancer, Accidents, Teenage pregnancy, Mental Health and other areas need to be collated and analysed using common data standards across this health economy. Robust data and information is needed for a variety of purposes including the assessment of health needs and the development and implementation of national and local strategies. These include the NHS plan, Cancer plan, National Service Frameworks, Health Improvement Programmes and Health Impact Assessment.
Post Holders will be based at the Health Authority. From the autumn, this will be in St Albans, whilst the shared Health Informatics Service will be based in Welwyn Garden City. The posts may require some travel between these sites, and also to other sites such as PCTs. Close collaboration with colleagues in different parts of this health economy will be essential. As well as data manipulation and statistical analysis, these posts will afford an opportunity to work in multi-professional teams, contribute to the interpretation of public health statistics (including the Annual report of the Director of Public Health) and support the Health Authority's strategic agenda.
An MSc in Medical Statistics or Epidemiology is desirable but a scientific graduate with suitable experience may also be considered .The posts will also give opportunity for development in epidemiology and experience in evidence based medicine under the guidance of the Head of Public Health Intelligence. Interviews are likely to be in the week beginning 6th August .
