1. Basic Statistics
Dates: Monday 7 January to Friday 11 January 2002
Course covers: types and presentation of data; sampling
variation and hypothesis testing; comparison of means and
proportions; principles of regression; sample size;
non-parametric methods; Bayesian approaches,Teaching is by
lectures and practical exercises.

2. Basic Epidemiological Methods
Dates: Monday 18th February to Friday 22nd February 2002
Course covers: the main epidemiological study designs -
cross-sectional, case-control, cohort and ecological
studies - and their strengths and weaknesses; measurement
of disease risk; confounding; causality, epidemiology and
public health policy. Teaching is by lectures, practical
exercises and small group work.

3. Introduction to Regression Models
Dates: Monday 22rd April to Friday 26th April 2002
Course covers: basic terminology and concepts in modeling
(stratified analysis to control for confounding,
interaction, dummy variables); simple and multiple
regression and its synonyms (ANOVA, ANCOVA); odds ratios
and relative risks; logistic regression. Teaching is by
lectures and computer practicals using Stata software.

4. Analysis of longitudinal (cohort) studies
Dates: Monday 29th to Tuesday 30th April 2002
Course covers: the relation between risks and rates,
analysis of rates using Mantel-Haenszel methods,
manipulating person-time data in Stata using st commands,
Poisson and Cox Regression, survival analysis, graphical
displays for survival data. Participants should have a
knowledge of regression analyses and teir implementation in
Stata. Teaching methods include formal
lectures, group work and computer practicals using Stata
software.

5. Systematic Reviews in Health Care: Meta-Analysis in
Context
Dates: Wednesday 19th June to Friday 21st June 2002
Course covers: principles of meta-analysis; statistical
methods and software; search strategies; publication bias;
clinical applications. Teaching methods include formal
lectures, group work and computer practicals using Stata
software. An optional introductory session to Stata will be
available.

6. Design and analysis of randomised trials
Monday 8th July to Friday 12 July 2001
Course covers: trial recruitment, sample size;
randomisation; multiple outcomes; repeated measures;
factorial designs; interim and sub-group analyses; economic
evaluation and qualitative methods alongside trials;
CONSORT guidelines. Teaching methods include formal
lectures, group work and computer practicals using Stata
software.
