The MSc in Genetic Epidemiology has been awarded 2 MRc studentships worth a
minimum of 7,500 pounds. We also have 3 bursaries worth 3,500 pounds each.

We also have two PhD projects available. E-mail us or visit our website for more details.

M.Sc. in GENETIC EPIDEMIOLOGY (Oct 2001-Sept 2002).

Division of Genomic Medicine, University of Sheffield.

GENETIC EPIDEMIOLOGY is the study of the genetic basis of disease in human
populations. It develops and uses mathematics and statistics to study the role
of genes in disease causation and severity, and to locate their positions in the
human genome. Such knowledege may lead to therapeutic techniques, better
diagnosis and drug targeting.

There is an acute shortage of well-qualified individuals in this area, and thus
there are many exciting and well-paid opportunities for trained individuals.

Places are available for the above course for the academic year 2001-2002
(commencing September).

The aim of the course (which is partially supported by Glaxo-Wellcome) is to
produce well-trained genetic epidemiologists who have both the theoretical and
practical knowledge and experience to contribute to genetic advance.
We anticipate applications from:

1. Graduates in Genetics/Biology/Medicine.
2. Graduates in Maths/Stats/Subject with substantial component of these.
3. Practitioners in Genetics/Epidemiology who wish to acquire some knowledge
of parts of the area.

All entrants will be required to hold an honours degree in a relevant
discipline. Those with medical/genetic/biological background will be expected to
have some proficiency and experience in maths and stats such as is usually
provided in such undergraduate programmes. In the absense of this we would
require firm evidence of mathematical ability (A-level Maths for UK students for
example). For those with maths/stats and relatively little biology/genetics
necessary material will be covered.

For UK/EU students fees are 2,740 pounds (in 2000 subject to annual increase).
For non-UK/EU students fees are 10,300 pounds (in 2000 subject to annual
increase). All students will be required to pay a bench-fee of 1,000 pounds as a
contribution towards the cost of materials, software, etc.

The course is taken full-time over 12 months or possibly part-time over 24 or 36
months. Individual modules may be taken by taken as a short course at a cost of
1,000 pounds per module.

We have 2 MRC studentships available worth a minimum of 7,500 pounds (last year
students got a 2,000 pound bonus) and 3 bursaries worth 3,500 pounds. In both
cases fees are also paid.

Course Structure

The course comprises 11 taught modules, a seminar module (12) and a substantial
research project.

1. Basic Statistics (Mr Alan Rigby, ScHARR, U.of S.)
2. Programming in C (Mr Mark Cannings, ActionPoint Solutions Ltd.)
3. Basic Genetics (Dr Angie Cox, DGM, U. of S.)
4. Basic Human Genetics (Dr Martin Nicklin, DGM, U. of S.)
5. Epidemiology 1 (Dr Ravi Mahaswaren & Dr Darren Schickel,ScHARR, U. of S.)
6. Epidemiology 2 (Prof. Mike Campbell, ScHARR, U. of S.)
7. GE1. Population Genetics (Prof. Chris Cannings, DGM, U. of S.)
8. GE2. Segregation Analysis (Dr Doug Easton, CRC Camb. and Dr Dawn Teare,
DGM, U. of S.)
9. GE3. Linkage Analysis (parametric)(Dr Doug Easton, CRC Camb. and Dr Dawn
Teare, DGM, U. of S.)
10. GE4. Linkage Analysis (non-parametric) (Dr Jenny Barrett and Prof. Tim
Bishop, ICRF Leeds)
11. GE5. Association Studies (Dr Jenny Barrett and Prof. Tim Bishop, ICRF
Leeds)
12. Seminar Series. To include IPR, Ethics, New Technology, Computer Intensive
Methods, Clinical/Genetic Databases plus items from the regular divisional
seminar programme.
