Surviving Six Sigma - Prof. Tony Bendell (Leicester)
Location: Senior Common Room, B18, Fylde College, Lancaster University.
The Six Sigma movement has invaded the UK and Europe from North America.
Like previous statistically-based quality improvement programmes originating
from the USA, this approach focuses on developing the statistical design,
analysis, implementation and control skills of engineers and managers to
solve quality problems and implement improvements, rather than rely on the
involvement of statisticians. In this sense, it is like the Taguchi
methodology movement of the late 1980s. Six Sigma, however, is much wider
than experimental design incorporating, in a sense, 141 statistical tools
and concepts. The major area of application is in manufacturing and design,
with users such as Motorola, GE, Allied Signals, and many more in most
sectors from food to automotive. Service applications, however, are rising
particularly in areas such as Financial Services - eg GE Capital, Citibank,
Lloyds TSB - and travel (eg American Express). The talk will review the Six
Sigma approach, the potential for involvement of statisticians, the barriers
and benefits to this, and the implications if it does not happen.
The meeting will be preceded by a short AGM.
