The Department of Statistics at NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY, UK invites
applications for three full-time EPSRC research studentships in
Statistics and Operational Research, commencing in September 2001.
The department has a strong research profile with 13 lecturing staff
led by Professors Kevin Glazebrook (Applied Probability), Murray
Aitkin (Statistics) and John Matthews (Medical Statistics). There are
currently four research associates and a lively group of 18 PhD
students in addition to staff working in the Newcastle Statistical
Service.
We have many research projects available in the areas of: analysis of
DNA sequences; Bayesian statistics; extreme value theory; medical
statistics; optimal control of stochastic systems; optimal design of
clinical experiments; scheduling problems; screening procedures;
sequential selection problems; statistical bioinformatics; statistical
genetics; statistical modelling; stochastic processes. Preference will
be given to applicants who wish to undertake projects in
* statistical genetics/molecular biology/bioinformatics,
* medical statistics,
* extreme value theory.

Applicants should have (or expect to have) at least a 2(i) honours
degree or a recognised postgraduate qualification containing a
substantial element of mathematics and/or statistics, and should
satisfy EPSRC eligibility requirements on residency.
