Monitoring medical outcomes: Bristol, Shipman and beyond
DAVID SPIEGELHALTER

ABSTRACT
Recent high-profile cases have focused attention on the problems
of prospective monitoring of health outcomes. We explore the use
of methods with a background in quality control but adapted to the
clinical context, and in particular see what would have happened had
a risk-adjusted sequential probability ratio test been applied to the
Bristol and Shipman data.
