Medical Research Council Biostatistics Unit
Information Resource and Database Manager /
Statistical Assistant
The MRC Biostatistics Unit (Director: Professor Simon Thompson) includes around
20 statisticians and 8 PhD students, and has an international reputation in
biostatistical methodology and applications. Computing facilities are excellent.
Applications are invited for this post initially working at the hub of a large-scale,
multicentre, epidemiological study of cognitive function and ageing (MRC CFAS Study)
which is funded by the Medical Research Council and Department of Health. The study
has recently been awarded a MRC Cooperative Group Grant.
In addition to determining the prevalence and incidence of cognitive decline and
dementia, their risk factors, associated disability, and service needs,
MRC CFAS provides a core structure for specialised studies of brain pathology,
subtypes of dementia, and genetics; it has a multi-centered, two-stage, stratified
cohort design and has recruited over 18,000 subjects.
The successful candidate will work alongside statisticians within CFAS, including
internal and external CFAS collaborators. They will be responsible for structuring
and management of complex interlinked databases, the production of audit trails and
associated documentation, data cross-checking and editing, and understanding and
interpretation of variables. There is also need for experience of statistical
analysis and efficient programming in SAS, including macros.
The postholder will be a graduate in computing/statistics/mathematics and must be
dynamic with an ability to present problems to committees and be capable of
suggesting and judging solutions. Interpersonal and communication skills will be of
the highest standard.
The post is a full time appointment to MRC Band 4, starting as soon as possible.
The initial salary is likely to be £22,000 - £26,000 per year.
