Analysis of Gene flow in Transgenic Plant Populations
School of Plant Sciences and School of Animal and Microbial Sciences
Salary is in the Research 1A scale GBP 17,451 p.a. to GBP 26,229 p.a.
A four-year post is available to work on challenging problems in the risk
analysis of GMO releases. The work is part of a large consortium project that
aims to provide an integrated understanding of the extent and consequences of
the flow of trans-genes from genetically-modified oilseed rape (Brassica napus)
into wild relatives, primarily wild turnip B. rapa.
The main aim of the project is to develop statistical methods to infer and
model gene flow. Both remote sensing and linked microsatellite data will be
available. The successful candidate will have wide freedom to pursue their own
ideas in this general area. The project will give a good opportunity to
enhance and develop skills in coalescent-based modelling and methods of
computational statistics that are widely applicable in population biology and
elsewhere. In addition it offers tremendous scope for many collaborative
papers (10 PIs from 7 institutions, 7 postdocs, 2 RAs, and 2 research
students), and given the interest in GMO escape, these are likely to be in
high-impact journals.
We are seeking an enthusiastic researcher with a PhD who enjoys interacting
with biologists, who will be able to write computer programs to implement the
appropriate statistical and dynamical models, and will cooperate in analysing
the extensive data the consortium are collecting. Training in genetics or
ecology is not required, although a keen interest in understanding the
underlying natural processes is essential.
