Dear AllStat
Many thanks to all who replied to my original query regarding fraud in
clinical trials. Several people pointed me in the direction of a key reference
in Stats in Medicine. This paper was presented at the ISCB Conference in 1999
and stems from the work of the ISCB Subcommittee on Fraud.
Buyse M, George SL, Evans S, Geller NL, Ranstam J, Scherrer B et al.
The role of biostatistics in the prevention, detection and treatment of fraud
in clinical trials. Statistics in Medicine 1999;18:3435-51.
This is a key paper and has 115 references which should keep me busy.
Two of the references were by Stephen Evans, whose work was recommended by
several respondents:
Evans S. Statistical Aspects of the detection of fraud", in Lock S and Wells F
(eds), Fraud and misconduct in medical science.
BMJ Publishing group 1993; 61-74.
Evans S. Fraud and misconduct in medical science. In Armitage P and Colton T
(eds), Encyclopaedia of Biostatistics, Wiley, Chichester, 1998; 1583-1588.
The topic is also covered in the new reference work,
Redmond and Colton (eds) (2001) Biostatistics in Clinical Trials, John
Wiley and Sons, Ltd. Article on Fraud by Marc Buyse and Stephen Evans.

I have summarised to the list as I had several requests for anything I found
out. Hope this is helpful to others too and many thanks again to all.
