JOBS: Bioinformatics and modelling posts in BioSS
Following an increase in competitive core grant and other funding
successes, BioSS has created five new posts to strengthen its work in
two fast developing areas.
Statistical Genomics and Bioinformatics (2 posts)
Work will focus on developing methods for interpreting new forms of
molecular and gene expression data, including large-volume EST sequence
and microarray data, and population genetic data to locate genes
controlling important agronomic traits. A wide range of techniques will
be explored, including those from AI and machine learning disciplines.
Systems Modelling and Risk (3 posts)
Two posts will develop models for environmental systems, including
animal grazing, plant and microbial communities, and water catchment and
pollution. Particular emphasis will be given to exploring the effect of
introducing uncertainty and variability on predicted model outcomes. A
third post will develop risk models for various human and animal health
scenarios.
Posts are located at King's Buildings science campus, University of
Edinburgh, the Scottish Crop Research Institute, Dundee and the Macaulay
Institute, Aberdeen.
Candidates should have a good degree in statistics, mathematics,
computer science or a related field and at least two years relevant
postgraduate experience, preferably with an MSc or PhD. Experience of
working with scientists in an interdisciplinary research environment
will be a distinct advantage. Starting salary will be up to £23700,
possibly more for an exceptional candidate. In bioinformatics, we
intend to make a more senior appointment, with starting salary of up to
£28800.
