Just a reminder about the Avon local group RSS wine-tasting
meeting next week. If you are planning to go, could you let
Gillian Arnold (see below) know by the end of this week.
Thanks

Sensory evaluation of wines - some theory and practice!
Gillian Arnold (IACR - Long Ashton Research Station)
5:45pm Thursday 31st May
Conference Room, IACR - Long Ashton Research Station, Long
Ashton
Abstract: Most of the articles about wine which now
proliferate in our weekend newspapers are concerned about
quality or value for money, often based on very subjective
assessments and preferences. An alternative approach to
evaluating wines applies more objective methods of
profiling appearance, aroma and flavour using specific and
individual terms to describe the wines. This meeting will
start with a talk about some of these approaches and
statistical methods for analysing such data. There will
then be an opportunity to assess 5 red wines, perhaps
searching for and finding that elusive 'green bean' or
'marmite' character! Following the assessment, the AGM of
the group will take place, accompanied by refreshments both
liquid and solid. To end the meeting, a brief report of
the results from the earlier assessment will be given.
Anyone wishing to attend this meeting should contact
Gillian Arnold by Thursday 24th May at the latest so that
appropriate amounts of refreshments and wine can be
