NATIONAL GUIDELINE SUPPORT AND RESEARCH UNIT
We are establishing a clinical guideline research and support unit
within the Centre for Health Services Research. The work of the unit
with be multidisciplinary, novel and exciting, being central to the
development of clinical guidelines in England and Wales. Funded by the
National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) , the role of the
unit is to: . provide advice to NICE on technical issues . increase
capacity for guideline development through training and education .
support guideline development in national collaborating centres .
undertake research to increase the understanding of methodological
aspects of guidelines . develop clinical guidelines We are seeking to
appoint enthusiastic and motivated staff to the following posts within
the unit tenable for three years in the first instance.

An experienced Research Associate is required to work on a
multi-centre randomised controlled trial of tonsillectomy in children
(NESTAC). The post will be based at the Centre for Health Services
Research in Newcastle but will involve occasional travel to the other
centres in Liverpool and Manchester.
You will need a first degree in social sciences, psychology, nursing
or other health related discipline. A postgraduate qualification
which included study of research methods is desirable. The full

The appointment is full time and available for 2 years from 1 October
2001, or as soon as possible thereafter. Salary will be on the
Research Grade IA salary scale (stlg17,278-stlg25,969 pa).

A research associate is required for a study of the provision of
removable partial dentures. The study will look at why some patients
do not use their partial dentures and how NHS resources can be
targeted at these patients more effectively.
You will need a first degree in a social science, psychology, nursing
or other health related discipline. A postgraduate degree which
included study in research methods is desirable. The full details of
