The Health and Safety Executive is seeking to recruit two statistical officers
to join their Epidemiology and Medical statistics Unit , based in Bootle , for a
two years fixed term appointment. The posts may become permanent.
Reducing the incidence of ill health caused or made worse by workplace risk
factors is a key aim of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The Epidemiology
and Medical Statistics Unit (EMSU) undertakes epidemiological investigations of
workplace risk factors and uses new and existing data sources to help quantify
the extent of occupational ill health in Great Britain. This information is used
in HSE policy development including the provision of information to Government,
HSE Inspectorates, Health & Safety professionals and the public.
As a statistical officer you would be responsible for supporting the
Statistician Section Head, in the provision of statistical and epidemiological
information on the causes and distribution of occupational ill health. You will
be involved in epidemiological studies and surveys, and interpretation of
statistical data, with the aim of providing advice on a range of topical or
political occupational health issues.
Post One: You?ll be working in a team responsible for a range of initiatives
relating to occupational respiratory disease, lead exposure at work and
pesticide-related illness.
Post Two: You?ll be working across two teams responsible for measuring progress
against the Government?s national targets for reducing work-related ill health,
the management and analysis of surveys of self-reported work-related illness,
and statistics on asbestos-related disease.
For both posts, you?ll need an honours degree with substantial statistical
content, good IT skills (ideally SPSS or Stata), and the ability to communicate
to non-statisticians. Knowledge of epidemiological methods is an advantage,
although not essential as training will be provided.
Salary Range £17,500 to £20,000 based upon previous experience
