Department of Statistics
University of Munich
Research Associate Positions in Statistical Genetics & Bioinformatics
Several research positions are available in the newly established
Laboratory of Statistical Genetics and Bioinformatics at the
Department of Statistics of the University of Munich.
The posts are available initially for two years, with possible
extension for further two years. Pay and conditions are according
to the German BAT-IIa scale for civil servants (ca. 40K EUR p.a.
for 29 year old single employee).
The successful applicants will undertake research in methods and
algorithms for statistical genetics and bioinformatics in one or
more of the following areas:
- molecular evolution (evolutionary gene trees)
- population genetics (coalescent approaches)
- statistical genomics (gene expression analysis)
Ideal prior experience would include statistical modeling and
computational statistics (stochastic processes, MCMC, generalized
linear models etc.), computer programming (e.g., C, Java, R),
and knowledge in genetics and genomics.
For more information about the laboratory and its research, check
http://www.stat.uni-muenchen.de/~strimmer and the recent publications.
Applications are invited from researchers both at the postdoctoral
and doctoral level. Note that in Germany graduate study is free
of fees but requires the equivalent of the German "Diplom" in the
mathematical or natural sciences (e.g. M.Sc.). Doctoral students
will be employed part-time (BAT-IIa/2).
Munich is one of Germany's foremost scientific, economic and cultural
centres. Opportunities in molecular biology and bioinformatics are
ample. Its universities and research centres recently competed
successfully in several national bioinformatics infrastructure
initiatives. Munich is well known for its relaxed life style and
rich cultural activities (100s of museums, theaters and opera houses,
cinemas, international sport etc.), with easy access to a beautiful
countryside (lakes, mountains). Its international airport is the
second-largest in Germany. Climate is continental, with hot summers
and snowy winters.
The closing date for applications is January 20, 2002.
Enquiries and applications (to include CV, research interests,
list of publications, names of references, and brief outline
of intended research) to:
