Title: "An empirical analysis of software development problems in
twelve software companies - work in progress"
Abstract:
"In this talk we describe a study of the problems 12 different
software companies have experienced as part of software process
improvement (SPI). Qualitative data was collected from a total of 45
focus groups involving over 200 software development practitioners
identified as developers, project managers or senior managers.
Problems have been categorised into those relating to various types of
organisational issues, project issues and technical/software issues.
Using techniques such as contingency table analysis, log-linear
modelling and correspondence analysis, it is found that there are
marked relationships between the maturity of a company, as measured
using the capability maturity model (CMM), and patterns of reported
problems among the different practitioner groups. The work described
forms part of an on-going study which aims to develop a more holistic
understanding of the problems practitioners are experiencing in their
attempts to improve their company's software processes."
