CENTRE FOR MEDICAL STATISTICS
SEMINAR SERIES on BIOSTATISTICS 2001/2002
NO 2: Wednesday, November 21st, 2001, at 2:30 pm
"Parameter estimation for complex models"
D.M. Titterington
University of Glasgow
The talk will consider difficulties that arise in the analysis of
incomplete data. In principle, maximum likelihood or Bayesian inference
can be carried out, using tools such as the EM algorithm and Gibbs
sampling, but even these can become unwieldy or sometimes impractical.
Particular emphasis will be laid on labour-saving approximations, such
as the variational approximations that have recently been described in
the neural-computing literature. Models that will be discussed include
simple mixture models and the hidden Markov random field models used in
the statistical analysis of noisy images.
All welcome!!
