Centre for Process Analytics and Control Technology
RESEARCH POSITIONS
CPACT is a multi-disciplinary centre, bringing together teams of analytical
chemists, bioscientists, chemometricians, statisticians, chemical and
process control engineers and signal processing researchers from both
academia (Universities of Strathclyde, Newcastle and Hull) and industry.
Applications are sought for the following positions, which will involve
direct interaction with industrial members of the CPACT consortium.
Postdoctoral Research Assistant (Strathclyde) - Real Time Monitoring of
Bioprocesses
The objective is to develop advanced analytical monitoring, data fusion and
performance monitoring methodologies for application to biological
processes and fermentation. Experience in one or more of the following
areas would be valuable: fermentation technology; microbial physiology;
cell culture systems; analytical biotechnology; biochemical engineering.
Postdoctoral Research Assistants (Newcastle) - Modelling, Performance
Monitoring and Optimisation of Chemical and Biochemical Processes
The development of empirical and hybrid modelling methodologies that can be
applied in multi-site, multi-product process manufacturing, for process
monitoring and optimisation, is the key objective of this project.
Experience in a relevant engineering discipline, physics or applied
mathematics and an interest in industrial manufacturing challenges are
required.
Postdoctoral Research Assistants (Hull, 2 posts) - Monitoring of Chemical
Processes and Robust Processes for Solid Materials
The objective is to develop measurement protocols (both analytical and
mathematical) to enable on-line monitoring of primarily, non-uniform solid
materials, suspensions and slurries as well as investigating the drying,
mixing and blending processes. Experience in one or more of the following
areas would be valuable: chemometrics; experimental design; analytical
chemistry; spectroscopy; computational chemistry and mathematical
programming (especially using Matlab).
PhD Studentship (Strathclyde) - Process Monitoring and Control using
Ultrasonics
The studentship is with the Centre for Ultrasonic Engineering to
investigate the application of ultrasonic transducers for both agitation
and monitoring of industrial processes. No previous experience of
ultrasound is needed as training will be provided in a friendly, supportive
environment. In particular, candidates with a strong Science
(Physics/Chemistry) background are encouraged to apply.
PDRA positions are initially for two years. Salary will be in the range of
£17,451-£26,229 per annum depending upon age, qualifications and
experience. PhD studentships are fully funded for candidates with a first
or upper second BSc, MSci or MEng degree including a grant equivalent to an
EPSRC CASE award (£10,500).
For further information and informal discussions with the relevant academic
regarding the positions, please contact Dr Leslie Malkin in the first
instance. (Tel: +44 141 548 4836 Email: [log in to unmask]). Further
details about CPACT can be found on www.cpact.com.
Applicants should submit a CV, together with the names and contact
addresses of two referees, to Dr Leslie Malkin, Managing Director, CPACT,
University of Strathclyde, R6.16 Colville Building, 48 North Portland
Street, Glasgow G1 1XN. The closing date for applications is 8 October 2001.
