Hello all,
I'm new to the list, and a PhD student here at the University of
New Mexico. I have a research question, and I'd appreciate any help that
you can give.
I've recently been reading some of the
multidimensional/multifeature analysis that Doug Biber (1995) and his
colleagues have done on English, Korean and Somali. Although I have some
questions about methodological details, I find the overall idea very
compelling. In case anyone is unfamiliar with it, the idea is to gather
frequency counts per text for a number of variable features and do a
statistical factor analysis to see which features covary. Those groups of
features (called "factors" or "dimensions") are then interpreted in terms
of their component features.
My question is: has anyone attempted a Biber-style analysis of
French? Or is anyone in the middle of one, contemplating one, or even
against the idea of one?
Biber, Douglas. 1995. Dimensions of register variation: A
cross-linguistic comparison. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
