> Preliminary Announcement and Call for Papers
> Subject Centre Seminar
> Teaching Linguistics to Students of Foreign Languages
> Friday 7th December 2001 at Salford University, Manchester
>
> The aim of the event is to address the central question of what
> Linguistics should be taught to students of Modern
> Foreign Languages and why this particular selection. For example do we
> teach Linguistics in order to help students
> understand the structure of the language they are learning; to explore
> language as communication; to enable them to
> understand the process of language acquisition or do we teach it or
> for some other reason? We are also interested in
> considering the way in which Linguistics is taught, e.g in a
> multidisciplinary way (i.e. in a Linguistics department
> where there is no modern language teaching) or in an interdisciplinary
> way (e.g. in a department of Languages or Modern
> Languages and Linguistics department).
> This seminar will be of interest to anyone who is teaching Linguistics
> to students studying foreign languages as a major
> part of their degree (this includes courses that comprise Linguistics
> as a named component, or as an optional/compulsory
> module).
> The seminar will be organised in two parts. The first will be devoted
> to three keynote presentations outlining some of
> the issues involved in teaching Linguistics to students within the
> context of a foreign language degree while the second
> will be devoted to the presentation of individual case studies
> outlining current practice in this area. Time will be
> allocated for follow-up discussions after each case study.

> any of the issues detailed above and which
> outlines some of the areas in which students of foreign languages have
> differing or particular needs from students of
> Linguistics and to demonstrate some of the strategies and methods that
> colleagues use to address these needs. If you
