This may be of interest to colleagues who teach
Linguistics, whether general or French.

Subject Centre Seminar Announcement
Teaching, Learning and Assessing Linguistics
Friday 4th May 2001, CILT London 10.00 - 16.00
This seminar will focus on current and future developments
in materials for the teaching and assessment of Linguistics
and is intended to disseminate good practice and to
encourage the collaboration and participation of colleagues
in resource-based initiatives and projects. The day will
include presentations by invited speakers, time for
questions and discussion and participants will be invited
to bring along their own materials to share with the group.
In addition to this the Subject Centre has identified, in
its initial needs survey, a number of key activities for
learning and teaching that are seen as highly desirable by
our consitutent community. These include the development of
a bank of downloadable teaching resources for languages,
linguistics and area studies; more information on
e-learning and the sharing of expertise between colleagues
in different institutions. We are keen, therefore, to
explore ways in which these ideas can be taken forward in
the area of Linguistics.
Topics will include:
- Compiling a question bank for linguistics testing for use
online and across institutions (Paul Meara, Swansea) -
Developing web-based teaching materials (John Maidment s
FDTL 2 project and Mick Short s ILT Fellowship project for
Stylistics) - Using data sets in linguistics teaching (Jim
Miller, Edinburgh) - Corpus-based materials for teaching
linguistics
