NEW RESEARCH INTO RESIDENCE ABROAD

Invitation to a one-day research seminar
11 June 2001
CILT, 20 Bedfordbury, Covent Garden, London

Since 1993, the Universities of Duisburg, Bochum and
Portsmouth have been collaborating on research into aspects
of university language learning, with the support of the
Academic Collaboration Programme of the British Council and
Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst. With the retirement
of Professor Ulrich Raatz, 2001 also marks the completion
of a joint project developing new tools to investigate the
role of residence abroad in advanced language learning, and
provides an ideal opportunity to bring together leading
researchers in the field.

Programme

10:30	Coffee
11:00	Ulrich Raatz (Duisburg), Rüdiger Grotjahn (Bochum)
& Verena Wockenfuss (Duisburg): New tools to investigate
student residence abroad
12:15	Richard Towell (Salford): Evidence of the effects
of residence abroad on student fluency
12:45	Lunch
13:30	Anne Ife (Anglia): Assessing the impact of
residence abroad on vocabulary development
14:00	Paul Meara (Swansea): Vocabulary maintenance and
vocabulary loss: the aftermath of a year abroad
14:30 Robert Crawshaw (Lancaster):
Self-knowledge,intercultural awareness and student
narration during periods of residence abroad
15:00	Tea
15:30	Jim Coleman (Portsmouth): New findings from the
Residence Abroad Project: objectives, proficiency,
confidence, attitudes and employability
16:00	Close

There is no charge for the seminar. Coffee, lunch and tea
will be provided. Total attendance is limited to a total of
40, so an early response is encouraged.

With the support of CILT and the Subject Centre for
Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies.
